How to Read a Lighting Plot: A Beginner's Guide for Teachers (2026)
A lighting plot is a scaled overhead drawing that shows every lighting fixture in a theatre rig — where it hangs, what it does, and how it connects to the control system. If you can read a lighting plot, you can brief student crew confidently, ask sensible questions of a hire company, and catch problems before bump-in day. This guide walks you through every layer of the document, symbol by symbol, in plain English.
Plot vs Rig: What's the Difference?
Teachers often use these words interchangeably, but they mean different things on a production desk. The rig is the physical collection of fixtures hung in your venue — the actual lanterns, cables, and bars. The lighting plot (sometimes called the light plot or hang plot) is the 2-D drawing that tells the crew how that rig should be built. Think of the plot as the recipe; the rig is the cooked meal. When a hire company quotes you a rig, they should also supply the plot so your team can replicate or adapt it.
The Legend: Start Here Every Time
Before you read a single fixture position, find the legend — usually a box in the lower-right corner of the drawing. The legend is your decoder ring. It lists every symbol used on the plot and what it represents. Common entries include:
- Fixture type symbols — different shapes for Fresnel, profile (ellipsoidal), PAR, LED wash, and moving head fixtures
- Channel number — the number you type into the lighting desk to control that fixture
- Dimmer or circuit number — the physical socket or dimmer rack outlet the fixture plugs into
- Colour/gel code — e.g., "L201" means Lee 201 (Full CT Blue); "R32" means Rosco 32
- Gobo code — a reference number for the metal or glass pattern inserted into a profile fixture
- Focus/purpose note — a brief label like "DS-C wash" (downstage centre wash) or "special — chair"
If there is no legend, ask the designer or hire company for one before you brief anyone. A plot without a legend is like a map without a scale.
Reading the Fixture Symbols
Each fixture on the plot is drawn as a standardised symbol positioned on a bar, boom, or floor position. Here are the four you'll meet most often in Australian school venues:

The symbol's orientation on the bar tells you the rough aim direction. A fixture drawn pointing toward stage left on bar two means it's focused left from that position — useful for checking whether a fixture is likely to cause glare into an audience sight line.
Channels, Dimmers, and Why the Numbers Are Different
This is the point that confuses most first-time readers. A lighting plot carries two sets of numbers for every fixture, and they rarely match.
- Channel number — the logical address you use on the desk (e.g., Channel 5 = "DS centre Fresnel"). The board operator types "5" and that light responds.
- Dimmer/circuit number — the physical outlet on the dimmer rack that the fixture is actually plugged into (e.g., Dimmer 12). The dimmer rack is typically in the wings or a dedicated cupboard.
The console's patch links Channel 5 to Dimmer 12. If something isn't working, your first question is: "Is the fixture plugged into the right dimmer, and is the patch correct?" Many school-venue problems live exactly there. When reading a hire quote, check that the quoted dimmer count matches the number of circuits in your venue — a 48-circuit rack can't run a 60-fixture rig without some fixtures sharing dimmers, which limits independent control.
Colour and Gobo Notes
Gel (colour filter) codes appear alongside each fixture symbol, usually as a small alphanumeric tag. The prefix tells you the manufacturer:
- L = Lee Filters (e.g., L103 Straw)
- R = Rosco (e.g., R80 Primary Blue)
- GAM = GAM Products
When ordering gel for a school production, take the code list directly from the plot and give it to your hire or supply company. Don't paraphrase — "a warm amber" could mean a dozen different products. Gobo codes work similarly: the plot will note a manufacturer catalogue number (e.g., "Rosco 77730 — Breakup Leaf"). If your hire company supplies the profile fixtures, confirm the gobos are included in the quote or you'll be cutting your own from aluminium foil on bump-in morning.
Focus Notes: What They Mean on Paper vs in the Room
Focus notes on a plot are intentions, not guarantees. A note that reads "tight special — piano SR" tells you the designer wants a sharp, small pool of light on the upstage-right piano. Whether that's achievable depends on your venue's hanging positions, ceiling height, and the fixture's beam angle. When you brief your student crew or a hire technician, share the focus notes so they understand the purpose of each fixture — it dramatically speeds up the focus session because the technician isn't guessing. Allow a minimum of three to four hours for a full focus session on a 40–60 fixture school rig; larger productions need half a day or more. How to Brief Your Student Crew Using the Plot
- Print A3 copies. A4 is usually too small to read bar numbers clearly. Laminate one copy to keep at the rig.
- Walk the legend first. Spend 10 minutes before bump-in going through every symbol and what it means. Students who understand the language work faster and ask better questions.
- Assign ownership. Give one student the channel/dimmer spreadsheet and make them responsible for cross-checking the patch. Another student manages the gel cutting list.
- Use the focus notes as a briefing script. Read each note aloud so students can visualise what the finished rig should look like from the audience.
- Flag safety concerns early. Any fixture requiring work above 3 metres triggers your school's working-at-height procedure. Check your performing arts centre safety audit documentation before crew go up ladders or onto scissor lifts.
Reading a Hire Quote Alongside the Plot
When a lighting hire company sends a quote, lay it next to the plot and check four things:
- Fixture count and type match — every symbol on the plot should correspond to a line item in the quote
- Cable lengths are specified — a 15 m bar-to-rack run quoted as "standard cable" can blow out your budget if the rack is further than expected
- Dimmer capacity covers the load — add up the wattages on the plot; a 6 kW dimmer can't safely run three 2.5 kW parcans
- Consumables are itemised — gel, gobos, lamps (globes), and colour scroller media are often excluded from base hire prices
